An initial upper level low moving through the Rockies Wednesday and Thursday will bring the storm chance to some. By Friday, an advancing trough (above) in our upper atmosphere will fire up strong and severe storms once again.
The direction of the winds as the upper level trough approaches are from the southwest, drawing in Pacific moisture. The heaviest rain on Saturday looks to sit across the Central Rockies, stretching back towards the Sierra Nevada.
By Saturday, a lot of the moisture will be cruising into the Dakotas and north central Plains. We’ll keep a few showers around for Wyoming. However, another front looks to keep us unsettled in the PNW.
That next frontal boundary makes its presence known across the Pacific northwest on Sunday, bringing pockets of heavy rain and snow to the higher elevations.
Rain and snow spread inland by the early workweek, impacting the northern Rockies. Our earlier cold front from last Wednesday – Thursday has already cooled us down by this point, so temperature impacts aren’t expected to be as extreme.
This is just one forecast model and one screenshot, but you can see widespread snow across the higher mountain peaks by Tuesday. However, this forecast model (the GFS) paints more of a broad picture and pattern shift. Stay with us as we get closer to Tuesday and iron out the details and snow potential with more high-resolution forecast data.
Early indications from the same forecast model mentioned above (GFS) show the heaviest snow potential across the northern and central Rockies along with the Cascades.
