The nights are getting cool and the leaves will soon be changing. That means Pennsylvania and New Jersey are firing up their weekly fall foliage reports.
We’re still three weeks to a month away from peak fall foliage in the Lehigh Valley but Susquehanna and Wayne counties in far northeastern Pennsylvania are approaching their best color, according to the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Those looking for early glimpses of fall color should consider higher elevation parks and lakes like Delaware State Forest, Promised Land State Park or Ricketts Glen, the DCNR recommends.
The Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau expects peak foliage ranging from around Oct. 16 in the Wayne and Pike counties at the northern end to around Oct. 23 in the southern areas of Monroe and Carbon counties, just north of the Lehigh Valley.
Meanwhile, the foliage season is also just beginning in New Jersey, where the state overall is expected to peak around the average time — in mid- to late-October, according to NJhiking.com.
The peak will arrive earlier in the north, however. The New Jersey Forest Service says the North Jersey region, covering most of Warren County and points north and east, can expect the most color in early to mid-October.
Good viewing in this region can be found at High Point State Park, Stokes State Forest, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and Worthington State Forest, and Jenny Jump State Forest.
A rainy summer has potentially set the stage for vibrant color this autumn. Forecasters say dry, cool nights — no early freezes or unusual warmth — will be key to bringing out fall’s most vibrant display.
