The sparse rain in the past week didn’t reduce Michigan’s drought areas. In fact, drought areas expanded and were deemed much worse than the previous week. Here’s the latest drought status across Michigan.
There were two big changes to the drought status in the past week. Some areas that previously were not ranked as abnormally dry (the entry point into drought) are now called abnormally dry. The most important news though is the area covered in severe drought expanded to a much larger area.
Here is the latest U.S. Drought Monitor drought assessment. It uses information through this past Tuesday, and was posted yesterday.

The severe drought area covered just six percent of Michigan last week. This week there is almost 30 percent of Michigan ranked as in severe drought. Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Saginaw, Bay City, Midland, the Thumb and Tawas are all in the severe drought area. There is also another area of severe drought covering most of Benzie and Manistee Counties.
Last week there was 21 percent of Michigan with no dryness. This week that normal dryness area has shrunk to only seven percent of our land.
The Drought Severity and Coverage Index (DSCI) tries to show the severity of all of the drought areas. Michigan’s DSCI is now 192, and was 165 last week. Since 2000 there have only been 15 weeks that had a DSCI higher than this week. It’s a sign of significant drought across our state.
We aren’t alone. In fact, look at the national drought map below. The western half of the U.S. is in bad shape when it comes to drought.

We have some chances of rain here in Michigan in the next week. Unfortunately the rain doesn’t look so widespread and heavy that it will put much of a dent in the drought. There may be some help for localized areas.
