A dominating ridge of high pressure centered over California will finally flatten through the end of this week as a few weak waves of energy move onshore in the Northwest. One of these shortwave impulses will help to bring enough energy to the region to lead to chances for a few severe storms Thursday and Friday.
A cold front associated with the trough will push past the Cascades to bring instability to Eastern Oregon and the Bitterroots. A marginal risk (level 1 out of 5) is in effect, denoting the potential for a few isolated strong to severe storms. Dry low levels of the atmosphere will help to support the potential for damaging downdraft winds that could top 58 mph, strong to enough to down weak trees.
Timing will mainly be in the mid-afternoon hours during peak heating, when enough instability will be able to build to bring strong downdrafts to the surface.
On Friday, the energy from the trough will swing east of the Rockies/Continental Divide to bring severe weather potential to much of Central and Eastern Montana. A marginal risk has been issued from the I-15 corridor to the east into Northwestern North Dakota. Once again, it appears potential for more widespread severe storms will be limited but a few isolated strong/severe storms are possible, mainly with the potential for damaging winds. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
Once again, severe potential will greatly depend on energy build through diurnal heating, but energy leftover from Thursday may continue to push through Central Montana overnight into Friday morning. By the afternoon, isolated to scattered severe storms are possible, mainly with the potential to produce damaging downdraft winds. As heating wanes in the evening, the severe threat should as well.
Flooding is not expected though burn scar areas should be monitored for heavy rain which can quickly lead to flooding. Strong thunderstorms could produce over half an inch to an inch of rain.
