Severe thunderstorms with possible damaging winds, hail and potential tornadoes are expected Sunday afternoon and evening in the Chicago area, according to the National Weather Service.
The metro area should expect two rounds of thunderstorms, said Rafal Ogorek, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Romeoville office. The first storm system will affect areas north of Interstate 80 between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., and the second storm is expected between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. Monday, south of the interstate, he said.
Both storms could be accompanied by winds as strong as 70 mph — strong enough to blow down trees and large limbs — as well as hail and possibly tornadoes, according to forecasters. The weather service has issued a warning for the threat of severe weather.
Ogorek said people should pay attention to the weather, particularly if they are out and about on Sunday. He recommends people have a plan to seek shelter if they are outside when thunderstorms hit and have multiple ways to monitor the weather and receive weather alerts or warnings.
Temperatures on Sunday, Father’s Day, will stay in the high 80s and low 90s, but will cool down early next week with lingering rain and thunderstorms southeast of the city, Ogorek said. Monday has the greatest chance of rain, with high temperatures in the 70s and lows in the 50s, according to the weather service.
Lake Michigan’s internal temperatures remain in the 60s, and significant waves are not expected early next week, Ogorek said.
