Another Round of Severe Thunderstorms, Including Tornadoes, Expected in the South Friday and Saturday | The Weather Channel - Articles from The Weather Channel | weather.com - The Weather Channel

  • More severe weather is expected in the South Friday and Saturday.
  • Areas from Texas and Oklahoma to Georgia and the Florida Panhandle are in the threat zone.
  • Damaging thunderstorm winds, hail and tornadoes are all threats.

Severe thunderstorms will become more numerous in the storm-fatigued South Friday and continue into Saturday from Texas and Oklahoma into Georgia and the Florida Panhandle.

The atmosphere will take a one-day breather Thursday, after severe thunderstorms spawned at least one apparent tornado near the Arkansas - Louisiana border Wednesday evening, damaging homes in Morehouse and West Carroll Parishes, Louisiana.

By Friday, warm and humid air from the Gulf of Mexico will return northward over much of the South as a low-pressure system forms in the southern Plains.

Strong jet-stream winds will increase and punch over that steamy air mass, providing wind shear for supercell thunderstorms and also supporting clusters of storms with strong winds.

Severe Forecast

Friday

By afternoon, scattered severe thunderstorms are expected in a rather expansive area from Oklahoma and the I-35 corridor or Texas to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The main threat during the afternoon is large hail, especially in Texas and Oklahoma, though supercell thunderstorms may also spawn a few tornadoes.

By evening, severe thunderstorms should become more numerous, organizing into long-lived clusters or lines over the lower Mississippi Valley, including parts of northeast Texas, southeast Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and western Tennessee.

Damaging thunderstorms winds, tornadoes and hail are all threats Friday night in these areas, particularly those in the darker red contours in the outlook map below.

Saturday

A line of strong to severe thunderstorms may be ongoing Saturday morning in the parts of the Deep South with a threat of damaging winds and perhaps a few tornadoes.

Otherwise, isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts are possible Saturday afternoon from the northern Gulf Coast into parts of Tennessee and Kentucky.

Flood Threat Forecast

Along with the severe thunderstorm threat, recent heavy rain and upcoming locally heavy rain may trigger flash flooding in parts of the South.

Parts of Mississippi, Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and Georgia may see a couple inches of rain or more, particularly Friday night into early Saturday.

That heavy rain may lead to local flash flooding in some spots, particularly if a line of thunderstorms moves slowly or stalls temporarily.
