Around 2,000 containers aboard large vessel lost due to severe weather - Ship Technology

Almost 2,000 containers aboard the ONE Apus were either lost or damaged after the vessel was hit by stormy weather in the Pacific Ocean.

The 14,000 TEU containership is owned by Chidori Ship Holding, managed by NYK Ship Management, and chartered to Ocean Network Express (ONE).

It was travelling from Yantian, China; to Long Beach, California; and heading to Japan for assessment when it was hit by the stormy weather.

ONE Apus was scheduled to reach in Kobe port on 7 or 8 December, reported Reuters.

The vessel hit a violent storm 1,600 nautical miles north-west of Hawaii. The ship rolled due to a swell, thereby dislodging containers.

According to the estimates, the count of lost or damaged units could be more than 1,900, of which around 40 are believed to be dangerous goods containers.

The crew is reported to be safe and uninjured.

According to a report released this year on container losses by the World Shipping Council, an average of 1,382 containers were lost at sea each year, during the past 12 years.
