Severe weather expected for New Year's Eve - Beaumont Enterprise

In typical 2020 fashion, the last day of the year will be cold and blustery with severe thunderstorms and an “enhanced risk” for severe weather — including tornadoes — in the afternoon.

Scattered storms and strong wind gusts began impacting the region Wednesday afternoon, with a wind advisory warning of gusts up to 30 mph until 5 p.m.

But the most severe risk comes along with a cold front early Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening.

“There are fairly low chances of rain overnight (Wednesday), probably in the 20-30% range,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Seth Warthen told The Enterprise. “We will start to see some showers start to develop through the morning, but I think the primary severe threats are going to hold off until the early (Thursday) afternoon hours.”

The NWS office in Lake Charles released a hazardous weather outlook Wednesday saying that in addition to wind and tornadoes, “localized flash flooding will also be possible in areas that see multiple heavy rain producing storms in a short period.”

Most of the storms should clear out of Southeast Texas by early evening, but officials stressed the importance of being weather aware.

“I don’t think people necessarily need to forego all activity tomorrow, but it is definitely something they need to keep an eye on, because any of those stronger storms could pose a fairly significant threat, especially if a tornado or two were to develop,” Warthen said. “I would say this is one of those situations to at the very least have a way to get weather alerts.”

The first forecast of 2021 will be cold, with highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s, and cold blustery winds.
