New Year’s severe weather threat: Storms possible tonight and into Friday across much of Alabama - al.com

It looks like Mother Nature will provide a few fireworks to ring in 2021.

The National Weather Service says strong to severe storms will be possible tonight into Friday morning across much of Alabama.

The strongest storms could have winds up to 60 mph, and a tornado or two will be possible, wth the better chances across south Alabama.

Heavy rain will also be possible, with some areas seeing up to 2 inches.

It will also be windy, even away from storms. The weather service said wind gusts up to 30 mph will be possible through Friday.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has maintained a slight risk for severe weather across a large chunk of southwest Alabama (see map at the top of this post).

A slight risk is Level 2 out of 5 and means scattered severe storms will be possible.

Some of the cities in the slight risk area are Mobile, Tuscaloosa, Selma, Greenville, Livingston, Brewton, Camden and Centreville.

Other areas in Alabama to the east and north have a marginal risk, which is Level 1 and means isolated severe storms will be possible.

Some of the cities in the marginal risk area are Birmingham, Montgomery, Troy, Talladega, Jasper, Hamilton, Cullman, Oneonta, Columbiana, Ashville, Prattville, Andalusia, Elba and Geneva.

The area under a marginal risk increases on Friday, New Year’s Day, and includes most of the state except for southwest Alabama. Below is Friday’s severe weather outlook:

Friday severe weather outlook

A marginal risk for severe weather will last into Friday for much of Alabama.

The better chances for bad weather on both days will be across south Alabama, according to the weather service.

Forecasters at the weather service in Mobile said showers will be possible during the day today but the threat for severe weather will begin this afternoon and last into Friday morning.

The weather service in Birmingham said the window for possible severe storms across central Alabama will begin in the west around midnight and shift eastward through Friday morning.

The weather service in Huntsville said the risk for severe weather in north Alabama is on the lower side, but stronger storms will be possible from 3 a.m. Friday through 3 p.m. Heavy rain could begin as soon as this evening, however.
