Confidence growing about threat for severe weather in Alabama on New Year’s Eve - AL.com

The threat for severe weather remains on the table for much of Alabama for Thursday, New Year’s Eve.

Tornadoes, damaging winds up to 60 mph and heavy rain will be possible for much of the state, with the best chances across south and south-central Alabama, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms are expected to develop ahead of and along a strong cold front and affect Alabama anywhere from Thursday afternoon into Thursday night.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has expanded the area in Alabama at risk of seeing strong storms on Thursday. It now stretches farther north and includes more of central Alabama as well as all of south Alabama (see map at top of this post).

Here’s the outlook for Thursday for southwest Alabama from the National Weather Service in Mobile:

South Alabama Thursday forecast

All of southwest Alabama could have to deal with strong to severe storms on Thursday.

The severe weather threat includes central Alabama as well as of Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Birmingham:

Central Alabama Thursday outlook

The areas in yellow will have the best chances for seeing severe weather on Thursday.

Strong storms will be possible statewide, however, according to the weather service, as well as heavy rain that could lead to isolated flooding.

Here’s the outlook for north Alabama this week:

North Alabama outlook

A few strong storms will also be possible in north Alabama on Thursday, as well as up to 1 to 3 inches of rain.

The weather service said 1 to 3 inches of rain will be possible statewide through Friday morning.

Winds will also be gusty away from storms. The weather service said gusts of 25-35 mph will be possible Thursday night.

The details are still uncertain, but it’s possible Alabama could have to deal with a squall line of strong to severe storms on Thursday, with the possibility of individual storms developing out a head of the line.

Forecasters cautioned that the threat level could change over the next few days “so continue to monitor the latest forecasts.”

Drier and cooler weather is expected on New Year’s Day once the front passes, with highs in the upper 40s and low 50s in north Alabama, the low to midi-50s in central Alabama and the mid- to upper 50s in south Alabama.
