Frank Jackson’s NBA career is still alive.
On Sunday, the Detroit Pistons announced that they have signed the former Lone Peak High star to a two-way contract, a deal ESPN’s Eric Woodyard first reported on Christmas Day was in the works.
The contract potentially brings some stability for Jackson after a wild month. In November, the former McDonald’s All-American was traded by the New Orleans Pelicans (the team he was with his first three seasons in the NBA) to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of the four-team deal headlined by Jrue Holiday that also saw former Bountiful High and Utah State star Sam Merrill get moved from the Pelicans to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Just a few days ago, however, Jackson was waived by the Thunder as they finalized their roster before the start of the regular season, leaving him in limbo for a short time.
Under normal circumstances, Jackson’s two-way deal would mean he would spend most of the season with the Pistons’ NBA G League affiliate (the Grand Rapids Drive) with the chance to spend up to 45 days with Detroit, although there is some uncertainty whether or not the Drive will participate in the G League’s “bubble” in February (details of that are still being ironed out).
In landing with the Pistons, Jackson will be teammates with former University of Utah star Delon Wright, and former Ute guards Jarred DuBois and Aaron Dotson are on the coaching staff there. Detroit’s other two-way player, Saben Lee, was drafted by the Utah Jazz in November but traded with Tony Bradley to the Pistons for cash considerations.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Jackson averaged 7.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 120 games for the Pelicans over two seasons after missing his entire rookie year because of injury.
