CT Weather: Severe Weather Forecast For Christmas Eve, Day - Patch.com

CONNECTICUT — There is growing confidence that Connecticut will see some wild weather on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. No it won't be snow, instead it will be heavy rain and strong wind gusts.

Also of concern is the potential for dense fog and flooding due to the snowpack currently on the ground. Temps will soar into the mid 50s on Christmas Eve as the rain moves in.

First thing first. Connecticut is dealing with dense fog early Monday morning so please exercise caution if you need to drive. Also there may be a period of light snow Monday night but no real accumulation is expected.

Tuesday and Wednesday look tranquil with plenty of sunshine and temps above 40 degrees. And that sets the stage for a potentially wild couple of days on Christmas Eve and early Christmas Day.

The National Weather Service has already issued a hazardous weather outlook for northern Connecticut saying, "Heavy rain, potential flooding and possibly strong winds Christmas Eve and Christmas Day."

For southern Connecticut, the weather service said, Christmas Eve starts off dry and fog will roll in due to the melting snow. Sometime on Thursday heavy rain and strong wind gusts are expected to move in. Wind gusts could be in the 40-50 mph range, the weather service said. Up to two inches of rain is forecast for Thursday and Friday.

And thunderstorms are also possible on Christmas Day, the weather service said and the precipitation may end as some light snow late Friday as the temps drop rapidly.

WTNH News 8 chief meteorologist Gil Simmons said, "Welcome to Winter! Watch your step and driving early today as there are quite a few icy spots! Some melting this afternoon with temperatures in the 30s to about 40 along with lots of clouds and some sunny breaks. A spotty rain or snow shower possible tonight and then more sun tomorrow afternoon! Wednesday looks nice with 40s! A severe wind storm expected late on Christmas Eve with heavy rain that will clear for Christmas Day. Merry Christmas!"

NBC Connecticut chief meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan and Fox 61 meteorologist Sam Sampieri detail the chance for severe weather.
