Hart to Hart Farm in Albion battles devastation after severe storm rips off barn roof - WGME

ALBION (WGME) -- Hart to Hart Farm in Albion escaped flooding from Monday's devastating storm, but the wind was a different story.

"In like 20 minutes, how your life changes in a flash, and it's just like, we've worked so hard. So hard to get to this point," Hart to Hart Farm co-owner Linda Hartkopf said.

Hartkopf says 70 mile per hour winds whipped through their farm Monday.

"This big huge gust, I mean the wind was incredible up here it just sounded like a freight train. And it came in and you could see part of our roof," Hartkopf said.

The roof to one of their barns ripped off.

"Debris just took right off and started flying through the air," Hartkopf said.

Massive metal pieces, screws and wood littered their farm.

"I just looked and could not believe the devastation and the damage that was done," Hartkopf said. "Metal comes through and it would just slice you in half."

No one was injured and all 60 milking cows made it out okay.

Now the Hartkopfs are scrambling to decide where to put their cows when weather gets colder.

For now, they're okay in the barn without a roof.

"As soon as the weather turns, it's just gonna be just a dangerous situation. It's not good for them," Hartkopf said.

The Hartkopfs are seeing if another farm can hold on to them for now.

Worst case scenario, they'll have to sell them.

"We've lost income. Right now we had to dump a load of milk," Hartkopf said. "It will be sad to see the cows go, because these are genetics we have been working on for a long time."

This barn has stood for decades, and now it has to come down and be entirely rebuilt.

Hartkopf says they're devastated, but thank friends and other farmers who quickly pitched in to help pick up the pieces.

"We really open our doors to the community and to see them just come back and share that love with us," Hartkopf said. "It brings tears to our eyes that there is that support from our community."
