An approaching front may generate a strong to severe line of storms before sending temperatures plummeting near the 30s in Houston this weekend.
A warm end to the work week with highs forecasted in the mid-70s for Friday will precede a weekend shift towards cold and storms:
"Saturday morning will start out warm and muggy, and much of Houston may get into the mid- or upper-70s. At some point we’re going to see a storm system, perhaps an intact line of storms, perhaps a broken line," Space City Weather's Eric Berger wrote in his Wednesday morning forecast. Berger warned that "we can’t dismiss the possibility of some of these daytime thunderstorms becoming severe due to the somewhat unstable air mass" and that confidence in the forecast will increase within the next few days.
After a potentially turbulent Saturday, a blast of cold air and bone-chilling winds are expected to push temperatures into the 40s overnight, with feels-like temperatures in the 30s forecasted for much of the Houston metro area Sunday morning due to persistent high winds, according to Berger's Wednesday morning forecast. "Sunday’s high temperatures will likely only reach the upper 50s even with lots of sunshine. Absolute temperatures on Monday morning will be even colder, probably down to around 40 degrees in Houston. But with less wind they’ll be more tolerable," Space City Weather's Berger wrote Wednesday morning.
The weekend chill will likely last throughout much of next week, according to Berger, with lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s expected for most of the week as of Wednesday morning.
