A small dog faces a costly road to recovery after it had a near-fatal run-in with a vehicle, according to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.The MSPCA said a 2-year-old Chihuahua named Chanel was hit by a speeding car in Lawrence on Wednesday.X-rays taken at the Angell Animal Medical Center showed that Chanel had a severely fractured pelvis, as it was all but crushed by the car. The dog also likely has other injuries that will be revealed once additional diagnostics are performed.The MSPCA said Chanel's previous owners opted to surrender her because the totality of her injuries and ongoing care were more than they could take on.Chanel is currently at the MSPCA Animal Care and Adoption Center in Jamaica Plain, where she is receiving care ahead of a surgery that will likely be performed in early January at the Angell Animal Medical Center.MSPCA staffers who are tending to Chanel report that she is friendly and spirited and that she is showing a will to live that they hope will see her through the worst of her injuries.According to the MSPCA, Chanel will require weeks of intense care to regain her health and mobility after the surgery.The MSCPA said Chanel's surgery and after-care costs are likely to exceed $10,000.
