Severe Thunderstorms to Hammer the Plains With Hail, Damaging Winds, Tornadoes Through Friday | The Weather Channel - Articles from The Weather Channel | weather.com - The Weather Channel

  • Multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms will erupt in the Plains through Friday.
  • The most widespread severe thunderstorms will be in the Northern Plains.
  • Large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes are possible.
  • More rain will soak the already-flooded Red River Valley.

Severe thunderstorms will flare up over the Plains through Friday with large hail, damaging gusts and tornadoes from the Dakotas and Minnesota to western Texas.

Record-setting mid-May heat, muggy air more typical of summer and an active jet stream will combine to fire up rounds of severe thunderstorms in the nation's midsection.

Along with those threats, thunderstorms may also produce areas of blowing dust in the drought-stricken southern High Plains that could sharply reduce visibility, as occurred Tuesday evening in Texas.

Heavy rain may worsen ongoing river flooding in North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.

The current radar, watches and warnings are shown on the map below. Scroll down to see our latest severe weather forecast.

Severe Weather Forecast

The most widespread severe thunderstorms through early Thursday morning are expected from the Missouri Valley of eastern South Dakota and northwest Iowa into central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Tornadoes, large hail and damaging wind gusts are possible.

Meanwhile, another round of scattered severe storms is expected in the southern High Plains, from eastern New Mexico and western Texas into the Oklahoma Panhandle and possibly southwest Kansas. Strong thunderstorm wind gusts, blowing dust and some large hail over golf ball size are possible.

Thursday, a more widespread severe weather threat is in play in the Northern Plains, particularly from eastern Nebraska and northwest Iowa into the eastern Dakotas and the western two-thirds of Minnesota. Tornadoes, damaging wind gusts and hail are all once again concerns from late afternoon into the evening.

Thunderstorms in the Southern Plains may be more isolated, but could still produce strong wind gusts, blowing dust and hail.

Additional scattered severe thunderstorms are possible Friday from the upper Mississippi Valley to Oklahoma.

This latest round of Plains thunderstorms will also dump some locally heavy rain.

Some areas from eastern Montana to Michigan's Upper Peninsula could pick up another 1 to 3 inches of rain through Friday night.

This could trigger local flash flooding and is forecast to contribute to another modest rise in existing river and overland flooding in the Red River Valley of North Dakota, Minnesota and Manitoba, Canada, over the next few days.
