More severe storms possible today in Alabama; severe thunderstorm watch issued - AL.com

More severe storms will be possible in Alabama today, according to forecasters.

That comes after a very busy overnight that saw multiple severe thunderstorm warnings and a tornado warning for areas mainly in south Alabama.

The National Weather Service has gotten several reports of downed trees with those storms.

The storms aren’t over for today, however, and a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for south Alabama. It will be in effect until 4 p.m.:

The Alabama counties in the watch are Baldwin, Covington, Escambia, Mobile, Geneva and Houston.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center said large hail and wind gusts to 70 mph will be possible. Forecasters also added that tornado or two will also be possible.

The SPC is maintaining a Level 3 (enhanced) out of 5 risk for severe weather for parts of east Alabama in anticipation of more storms developing and becoming severe ahead of a cold front.

A Level 3 risk means numerous severe storms will be possible. The strongest storms could have damaging wind gusts that could bring down trees and power lines. Hail will also be possible. The tornado risk is low but not zero, according to forecasters.

The storms are expected to move out of the state by later this afternoon, and calmer and drier weather will take hold for the weekend.

There are no other severe weather threats on the horizon going into next week.
