After a quiet few days the chance for severe weather could return to the forecast for Alabama this weekend.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather for north and parts of central Alabama on Sunday, mainly from Sunday afternoon into Sunday night.
A Level 1 risk means isolated severe storms will be possible. The strongest of those storms could produced damaging wind gusts and hail.
Storms have been few and far between for much of Alabama this week, but a few severe storms cropped up on Thursday in west Alabama along the Mississippi border.
Some of those storms contained hail but the National Weather Service has (so far) not gotten any damage reports.
More of those pop-up storms will be possible today, especially closer to the coast, with storm chances increasing a bit through the weekend as the humidity level increases.
Isolated to scattered rain showers and storms will be possible on Saturday and into the day on Sunday.
The weather service will also be watching to the northwest of Alabama in case a complex of storms (a mesoscale convective system or MCS) develops and tracks into the state. If that holds together it could bring a few severe storms with it.
Rain chances could linger into Monday but then look for drier weather and possibly some of the hottest temperatures of the year going into next week, with highs in the mid-90s possible in some areas.
