Eagle River - This weekend is the busiest of the year for Lake Nokomis Cranberries. Not only are thousands of people visiting their farm for Cranberry Fest, but they are also dealing with the peak of harvest season.
"Well, it's definitely a great time, particularly in Wisconsin, to watch this harvest and to see the berries float up on the water and ready to harvest," said Jerry Fennell, the tour director at Lake Nokomis Cranberries Inc. "The workers coming together and the perfect weather, the fall trees is just a magical time to be out here."
Cranberries are the only fruit that goes through this unique harvesting process. There's no other crop that is grown dry but harvested wet.
Cranberry beds were dry just yesterday. Today, they've been filled with water and the machine called a harrow loosens the berries.
The next step is to get all the berries out of the bed. A large berry pump handles that job.
"It vacuums them out at about a rate of 100,000 pounds an hour and they go into the gravity wagons and they leave the farm that day," said Fennell.
These berries will be sent to a gathering spot in central Wisconsin where they are frozen within a few days.
"Seems to be average," said Mike Zawistowski, the marsh manager at Lake Nokomis Cranberries Inc. "It's not by any means a bumper crop but it's better than the last couple years."
As a result, cranberry lovers will have plenty of reasons to celebrate this holiday season.
"This year I'm gonna say they're better than ever," said Zawistowski.
