New Jersey will be on a weather roller coaster ride this weekend, with temperatures rising into the upper 70s Saturday afternoon, then taking a big drop into the 40s overnight as a strong cold front sweeps through.
The cold front is expected to spark several hours of stormy weather — with the possibility of some severe thunderstorms with damaging winds popping up Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening before the mercury goes down, according to the forecasters from the National Weather Service and AccuWeather.
Saturday is expected to get off to a pleasant start, with partly to mostly sunny skies and temperatures climbing from the low 60s in the morning to the upper 70s in the early afternoon.
More clouds should start rolling in during the afternoon, and there’s a threat of rain showers and strong thunderstorms breaking out from the late afternoon through Saturday night.
The National Weather Service says some of the storms might not pack a lot of thunder and lightning, but they still could generate wind gusts as high as 60 mph, which is strong enough to knock down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages.
Forecasters also say even though the probability is low, they can’t rule out the possibility of a brief isolated tornado in our region.
By Sunday morning, skies should be clear, but much cooler air will be sweeping in, with temperatures hovering in the upper 40s. As the day goes on, sunshine will help warm things up to the low 60s, but it will likely be breezy, so it will feel cooler.
Near-record temperatures
On Friday, it felt more like early summer than early autumn, with temperatures climbing into the low 80s in many parts of New Jersey.
Despite the warmth, no daily record highs were broken in the Garden State, but some came close.
The temperature at Newark Liberty International Airport reached 84 degrees Friday afternoon, which was only 2 degrees short of its daily record high for Oct. 15.
Atlantic City International Airport hit 82 degrees, which was 4 degrees short of its daily record high, while Trenton Mercer Airport reached 80 degrees, 4 degrees away from its daily record high, according to data from the weather service.
In the neighboring state of Pennsylvania, Allentown tied its daily record high of 82 degrees, and New York’s LaGuardia Airport tied its daily record high of 83 degrees.
