High school golf: Lone Peak has 4th straight 6A state title in sight - Deseret News

gemerlapbulan.blogspot.com

Lone Peak secured its third consecutive boys golf state championship last year, and after day one of this year’s 6A boys golf tournament it appears as though the Knights are on their way to a fourth consecutive title.

Lone Peak possesses a commanding 12-stroke lead following Monday’s opening round of golf at Davis Park Golf Course with a team score of 275 (nine under par). Following the Knights in a distant second place are Fremont and Corner Canyon, who tied with a score of 287.

The Knights are looking to secure their second “four-peat” in school history and their eighth state title in nine years.

Led by senior Preston Smithson, freshman Kihei Akina and junior Cooper Jones, Lone Peak built a lead early with a 12-under score of 132 through the front nine holes and finished as the only team with a score under par. As a team, the Knights recorded an eagle, birdie or par on over 80% of their holes.

Smithson, who has the highest individual score for the Knights, is tied for first atop the individual leaderboard with Herriman freshman Ryker Lind with a score of 66 (five under par). Smithson leads the field with eight par breakers — he recorded seven birdies to go along with an eagle on the eighth hole — while Lind is tied for the second lowest bogey total (only two bogeys for the day).

Akina finished two strokes behind Smithson and Lind on the individual leaderboard with a score of 68. Just behind Akina, with scores of 69, are Jones, Josh Savage (Pleasant Grove), Maddox Vincent (Corner Canyon) and Zach Labrum (Corner Canyon).

Competition will resume on Tuesday, and Lone Peak will look to maintain its significant lead and its longstanding claim to the 6A throne.
