Friday night featured a rematch of last season’s 6A semifinal between Region 4 foes Skyridge and Lone Peak. The Knights got the best of the Falcons in that meeting a year ago, but this time around was completely different as Skyridge took down Lone Peak 14-9.
It marked the Knights’ first loss to a Utah school not named Corner Canyon since October 2019. Falcons junior defensive back Dalton Young felt extra motivation to beat Lone Peak this year.
“(This game) meant a lot to us,” he said. “They knocked us out of the playoffs last year on a big kick return. I was playing last year, and it meant a lot to me, so I came out here balling with my brothers. Everyone was doing their job. It makes it really easy when everyone is doing their job.”
No one did a better job than Young. He led the way on defense with a blocked field goal and two interceptions, one for a touchdown.
Coming into the second half, the Falcons led the Knights 7-3. That quickly changed on Lone Peak’s first play from scrimmage as Young intercepted a tipped ball and took it to the house.
“They had a tight end; he ran a hitch. The quarterback overthrew him. I just was in the right place,” Young said. “I made a one-handed grab and took it to the end zone.”
Young and the entire Skyridge defense were as good as advertised. The Falcons entered the matchup holding opposing teams to an average of under 8 points per game.
“We played really physical and just stayed with it,” Skyridge head coach Jon Lehman said of the defense. “I was really happy with a couple of our red zone possessions and the way we just dug in and fought. Obviously, the takeaway for the score at the very beginning of the half was a major point for us in the game. I’m just happy with the win, with the way we stick together and fight.”
Lone Peak wouldn’t go away easily. After Young’s pick six, the Knights drove 75 yards before getting turned away by the Falcons’ stout defense on a fourth-and-2. The very next Lone Peak drive was shut down by Young when he blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt.
The Knights remained resilient, scoring a touchdown with 6:17 left in the fourth quarter. After a defensive stop, Lone Peak drove down to the Skyridge 22-yard line in less than two minutes. With the game on the line the Falcon defense came up with one last stop, halting the Knights offense on an incomplete pass in the end zone intended for Lone Peak senior two-way star Takeao Hansen.
“We always know (Lone Peak) is talented, and they’re going to bring it,” Lehman said. “We just played a really disciplined, clean game and struck when we had an opportunity and were able to pull it out in the end.”
Following tonight’s thriller in Lehi, both schools will have a short week of preparation with their next game being played Thursday at 7 p.m. Skyridge will welcome Pleasant Grove for another home matchup, while Lone Peak will travel to play Corner Canyon.
