Minnesota Weather: Severe Weather Threat Diminishing For Wednesday Evening - CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — After heavy rain fell Wednesday morning across southern Minnesota, the risk of severe weather is diminishing for afternoon and evening storms.

While the Storm Prediction Center is still forecasting an “enhanced” risk of severe storms for south-central and southeastern Minnesota, WCCO-TV meteorologist Mike Augustyniak says that he believes the risk is not that high for Minnesota, although he says isolated strong-to-severe storms are possible south of the Interstate 90 corridor.

“I question whether we’ll see much, if any, severe weather develop in Minnesota,” Augustyniak said, noting that tornadic storms could still blow through Iowa, threatening straight-line winds and hail.

Augustyniak says that the reason to think that the severe storm threat in Minnesota has diminished is due to the heavy rain moving across the southern half of the state, which has dropped temperatures into the 60s. Once the rain moves east into Wisconsin in the late afternoon, it’ll be difficult for a low pressure system to reinvigorate and form severe storms over Minnesota.

Overnight, skies are expected to clear, leading to a stretch of hot and dry weather. Thursday will be less humid, and temperatures are expected to make their way back into the 80s over the weekend. High temps and dry weather means drought conditions will continue to get worse and yards could begin turning yellow as soon as next week.
