Thunderstorms are already at severe limits through the Midwest and into the Southern Plains.
Right now, there is an enhanced risk for severe storms (level 3 out of 5), where the greatest threat from widespread severe storms extends from Southwest Missouri southwestward along the I-44 corridor into West Texas.
Wind gusts of 75+ mph are possible from the western Texas panhandle through the Ozarks along with hail that could top 2″. Outside these areas slightly smaller hail and lesser wind gusts are expected with the strongest storms, but still hail could be at least 1″ in diameter with winds of 60 mph.
Tornado potential is elevated from Texas through Western Illinois on Thursday, with isolated tornadoes possible for surrounding areas as well.
Forecast
A line of thunderstorms will march southeast through the evening hours with significant wind gusts of 75 mph, 2″+ hail and tornadoes are all possible into this evening.
The severe threat will continue overnight, transitioning mainly to a gusty straight line wind threat as the thunderstorms become more linear. A few brief weak spin up tornadoes will be possible in any bowing segments along the lines, but are not the primary severe weather threat.
