After several days of active weather in the Central and Southern Plains, another storm system will bring the threat for severe storms back to this region over the weekend. A low is expected to form in the lee of the Rockies on Saturday with an associated cold front developing. The energy from this low will tap into a warm and moist environment to create strong enough updrafts for severe storms.
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a slight risk for Saturday across the borders of Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma (top of page). A marginal risk extends to the south to the Mexico border. Damaging wind gusts and large hail are expected to be the primary threats, but an isolated tornado is possible.
Storms are expected to form along the continental divide Saturday afternoon before moving east across the Plains into the evening.
Energy from the low will shift south on Sunday across New Mexico and Texas. The SPC has issued a slight risk from Roswell to the south through the border with Mexico, with a surrounding marginal risk. Large hail and damaging winds are expected to be the primary threats but a few tornadoes are also possible.
A complex of storms could be ongoing through the morning hours across Texas and Oklahoma with damaging winds the most likely hazard.
Storm coverage should expand greatly in the afternoon across New Mexico and West Texas, with supercells likely east of the Continental Divide.
Heavy rain is expected with thunderstorms over the weekend with some potential for isolated flooding. Excessive rainfall outlooks have been issued for Saturday and Sunday, with rain totals over 2-5 inches possible in some locations.
This forecast will likely be adjusted as new data becomes available.
