HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - A few scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible this morning and early this afternoon, but as the afternoon progresses, a better chance for stronger thunderstorms will materialize near a front boundary that is stalled out right over the heart of the Local4 viewing area. Severe storms will be possible by the mid to late afternoon and continue into the evening. Initially, isolated supercells or multicell clusters of storms will develop. This will give the area the threat for large hail, damaging wind gusts, and perhaps an isolated tornado through the early evening. As the storms merge into a line of storms that push eastward, the main threat will be damaging wind gusts with some isolated large hail. Isolated pockets of heavy rainfall are possible. Meanwhile, high temperatures this afternoon will rise into the mid to upper 70s and lower 80s. Ahead of the front, winds will be breezy out of the south at 8 to 18 mph with gusts to 25 mph. Much of the rain and thunderstorms will be to the east by tomorrow morning, but a few lingering showers may still be there early tomorrow morning. Lows tomorrow morning will range from the lower 70s northwest to the mid 60s southeast.
Most of the area will see a quiet Tuesday, although some isolated thunderstorms may continue for our southeastern counties. If storms are able to get going in the afternoon, severe storms may be possible. Most of the area will likely stay dry. Look for partly cloudy skies will highs in the upper 70s and low to mid 80s. Most of Tuesday night will be quiet with lows from the upper 40s northwest to the upper 50s southeast.
While much of Wednesday will be a quite day with partly to mostly sunny skies (highs in the low to mid 80s), we’ll be watching the end of the day to see how thunderstorms materialize. If storms are able to fire along warm front as it lifts northward into Southern Nebraska, individual supercells could lead to our first chance of severe thunderstorms. In addition to that threat, a complex of thunderstorms developing out west will push east across the area Wednesday night through Thursday morning. Along with severe weather (damaging wind gusts being the biggest threat), heavy rainfall and potential flooding will be possible.
Thursday’s weather will somewhat depend on how Wednesday night plays out. More severe storms may be possible Thursday in Eastern Nebraska. There’s a chance that a large part of the area could be dry. Highs on Thursday will likely be cooler, ranging from the mid/upper 50s northwest to the mid/upper 70s southeast. North winds will likely be on the breezy side. Lows for many Thursday night will clear skies will be a bit chillier in the 40s. Friday will be a mostly sunny day and somewhat cool for late May. Highs will range from the mid 60s northeast to the mid 70s southwest.
Active weather returns for the weekend with numerous off and on chances for showers and thunderstorms through the holiday weekend. It’s a bit early to determine the severe weather threat for our area. Because of the clouds and moisture, highs will be hanging out somewhere between the mid 60s and mid 70s through Memorial Day. This won’t likely be a summer-like way to kick-off the unofficial start to summer.
