HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - After a cooler, pleasant start to the day, a warm front will lift north into the area. As this happens, lighter northeasterly winds will turn more out of the southeast and increase to 15 to 20 mph. These winds will bring warm temperatures and higher dew points back into the area. Temperatures will climb into the low to mid 80s. Farther north and west, some may still see 70s. Through the day, we’ll see sunshine in the morning become partly to mostly cloudy. There may even be the occasional stray shower. By the end of the afternoon thunderstorms will develop over Western Nebraska. It’s not of the question that something isolated develops closer to the central and eastern portions of the area. Thunderstorms, including supercells could become severe, producing hail up to baseball size, wind gusts to 70 mph, and even a few tornadoes. The greatest risk for this late this afternoon through the mid evening will be in Southwest Nebraska. As we move into the mid to late evening, these cells will merge into more of a line or complex of thunderstorms and push east across a large portion of Nebraska and Northern Kansas. At this point, damaging wind gusts will become the primary threat. Some significant gusts of 75 mph or greater will be possible and some of this threat could last to well after midnight as storms start inching more toward Eastern Nebraska. While not as much of a tornado threat overnight, these kinds of gusts are strong enough to do damage. Isolated tornadoes along the line of storms would still be possible. It would be a good idea to treat an severe thunderstorms warnings just like you would tornado warnings. If your area is warned, seek shelter at the lowest point in the interior of your home, away from windows. Before you go to bed, have multiple ways of being notified of severe weather warnings, including the KSNB Local4 Weather app (which is free) and a NOAA all hazards weather radio. Along with the severe weather threat, locally heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in several locations. A widespread 1 to 3 inches will be possible, but some places could exceed expectations.
Much of the severe weather threat should be done by sunrise Thursday. Low temperatures in the morning will be from the upper 40s northwest to the lower 60s southeast. A few showers may linger and there is still a small threat for severe storms in southeastern portions of the Local4 viewing area. There’s a chance that a large part of the area could be dry with partly sunny skies. Highs on Thursday will be cooler, ranging from around 50° northwest to the mid/upper 70s southeast. North winds will likely be quite breezy at 15 to 25 mph, drawing in the cooler air. Get ready for a quiet, but somewhat chilly night Thursday night with lows in the upper 30s northwest to the mid 40s southeast. Friday will be a partly cloudy day and quite cool for late May. Highs will range from the upper 50s northeast to the low 70s west.
Active weather returns for the weekend with numerous off and on chances for showers and thunderstorms through the holiday weekend. Initially, chances are a bit lower Saturday and will be a little more hit-or-miss. The chance for rain and isolated thunderstorms really picks upon Sunday and will continue for a large part of the area through Memorial Day Monday. Some showers may even last into Tuesday. This could lead to quite a bit of rainfall during this time frame with a widespread 2 to 5 inches. This could mean rainfall totals over the next week around 3 to 7 inches of rain. Because of the clouds and moisture, high temperatures will remain quite cool for late May and early June. Saturday may be the best day of the weekend with highs from the lower 60s north to the lower 70s southwest. Highs on Sunday will mostly be in the low to mid 60s, but some upper 50s may be possible. Similar temperatures are expected again on Monday. This won’t likely be a summer-like way to kick-off the unofficial start to summer.
