Rehearse your severe weather plan now while the weather is quiet - WREX-TV

ROCKFORD (WREX) — Severe weather season can start very early every spring, so go over your severe weather plan before we get to the season. As part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Illinois, here's a few things to review:

Know the terms:

Remember the difference between a watch and warning? These pop up year-around, and the same rules apply for the spring season.

A warning is more severe than a watch, so take shelter when one is issued for your area.

A watch is issued by the National Weather Service when severe weather is possible (or will happen soon). The watch is generally a large area, and highlights where and when severe weather may strike. When a watch is issued, pay attention. You can go about your day, but be ready to take action just in case.

A warning means severe weather is happening, or about to strike within the next several minutes. If your area is under a warning, take shelter or action immediately. You may only have minutes to get to your safe spot. Wait until the warning expires for your area before coming out of the shelter.

Know where to go:

Whether it is a run-of-the-mill thunderstorm or a severe one producing tornadoes or severe winds, get indoors as soon as you hear thunder. Thunder means you are close enough to the storm to get struck by lightning.

Get indoors and to the lowest level possible when severe weather strikes.

If a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning gets issued, stay away from the windows, and get to the lowest floor of your house or apartment. A tornado warning means get to the basement as quickly as possible.

Don't have a basement? Put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. That may mean getting into a laundry room, bathroom (preferably without windows and not on the outside wall), or into a closet.

Evacuate mobile homes. They may roll or blow over in a tornado or a very strong severe thunderstorm. Find the designated storm shelter in your neighborhood.

Know what to have:

Stock up your safe spot now while the weather is quiet.

Check over your safe spot when you have a spare moment. Does it have first aid supplies? Extra necessary medication? Non-perishable food and water in case you get trapped? Start gathering these things up and have your safe spot stocked up just in case.

Make sure you have ways of getting severe weather alerts, whether it's on your phone or through a weather radio. Have multiple ways to get severe weather alerts, in case one isn't working or doesn't get your attention.

Keep an eye on the forecast in case thunderstorms are mentioned. The 13 Weather Authority will keep you in the know in case severe weather is possible.
