The pronghorn (Antilocapra Americana) is a species of artiodactyl (even-toed, hoofed) mammal indigenous to interior western and central North America. Though not an antelope, it is often known colloquially as antelope, or pronghorn antelope, because it closely resembles the true antelopes of the Old World. It is the only surviving member of the family Antilocapridae. During the Pleistocene epoch, about 12 antilocaprid species existed in North America. As a member of the superfamily Giraffoidea, the pronghorn’s closest living relatives are giraffes and okapi.
The Colorado pronghorn is a game management success story. The antelope that numbered only around 5,000 in the 1940s now total more than 85,000 statewide. Hunters are its primary predator, but coyotes and golden eagles, who can swoop down and pick up a fawn, cull the herds, too.
It has been fun photographing wildlife on the Weld County prairie. No longer do grizzlies and bison roam, but elk are occasionally seen in the Pawnee National Grasslands, and the number of raptors flying around is astounding. I made this image with my Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 zoom lens (the sharpest lens in the Canon line) and a 1.4x tele-converter at 560mm, ISO 100, f14, 1/125 sec. Normally I shoot wildlife at least at 1/500 sec. to prevent motion blur, but in this case wanted additional depth of focus on Mount Meeker and Longs Peak in the background. This requires a steady hand for sure!
