Texas senior offensive lineman Derek Kerstetter was carted off the field during the first half of Saturday’s game against Kansas State after suffering what appeared to be a severe foot/ankle injury.
A Kansas State player appeared to inadvertently stomp down on Kerstetter’s left ankle and foot, sending the team captain to the turf in pain. Teammates crowded around Kerstetter to wish him well before trainers and on-site medics drove him slowly off the field in order to be transported to a local hospital in the Manhattan, Kansas, area.
Both Kerstetter's face and injured foot were obscured by towels as he left the field, though the Reagan graduate did throw a "Horns Up" on the way out.
Kerstetter had started Texas’ first eight games at center, but shifted over to right tackle for this game in the wake of starting left tackle Sam Cosmi’s decision to opt out. Freshman Jake Majors made his first career start at center, with sophomore Christian Jones starting at left tackle.
After Kerstetter’s injury, Texas inserted sophomore Rafiti Ghirmai at right guard and move senior Denzel Okafor to right tackle.
Texas (5-3, 4-3 Big 12) led Kansas State (4-5, 4-4) 31-17 at the half. The Express-News will have more on the contest's outcome and Kerstetter's condition following the completion of the game.
