Illinois job cut warnings hit new COVID peak - Crain's Chicago Business

Plans for sweeping job cuts at local hotels led to the largest month of layoff warnings statewide since Illinois' coronavirus-induced stay-home order began.

Illinois companies disclosed plans in June to lay off or furlough 15,175 employees, according to the latest monthly WARN notice from the state's Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

That number, which represents advance notice of mass job cuts or plant closures, was more than double the layoff warnings disclosed in the May report and tops the year-to-date monthly high of 12,133 that employers disclosed in March.

Some of the numbers represent job cuts that were already implemented in recent months. But the data signals there could be more pain ahead for the local labor force, even as the state cautiously loosens restrictions meant to temper the COVID-19 pandemic.

The hospitality sector, which has been especially bludgeoned by the outbreak, has borne a large share of the job cut pain. With group business travel virtually frozen and leisure travel hard to come by, many large downtown hotels have scaled back staffing, at least temporarily.

One of the largest disclosures in the June WARN report came from the Hyatt Regency Chicago, which listed 920 temporary and 89 permanent layoffs at the city's largest hotel by room number. At McCormick Place, the Marriott Marquis Chicago and Hyatt Regency Chicago disclosed a combined 942 temporary layoffs and furloughs. The Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile listed 538 jobs impacted by temporary layoffs, furloughs and reduction in hours. Another 414 temporary furloughs and layoffs were listed at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare.

Some hotel layoffs were listed as permanent, including 174 at the St. Jane hotel on Michigan Avenue, 153 at the Langham Chicago and 92 at the Swissotel Chicago.

Another big addition to the list was 446 permanent layoffs warned by men's fashion company Nordstrom Trunk Club, though the context of that figure was not immediately clear and a spokeswoman for the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Nordstrom said in March it would close all six of its physical stores and absorb the locations within its department stores.

Also on the list is Chicago-based foodservice giant Levy, which runs concessions at the United Center and Wrigley Field and premium food service at Guaranteed Rate Field. With Major League Baseball games expected to be played with few or no fans in attendance, the company warned of 16 permanent layoffs at the White Sox's ballpark and 621 employees facing a 50 percent reduction of hours. Levy listed another 969 employees with reduced hours at other locations. A Levy spokeswoman couldn't be reached.

Not listed on the report is United Airlines, which disclosed this week it could cut up to 45 percent of its U.S. non-management employees, or about 36,000 workers when its federal emergency payroll-support funding runs out Oct. 1. The company said employees won't be notified if they are losing their jobs until mid-to-late August.
