Lehigh Valley weather: Severe storm threat adds new dimension to heat wave - lehighvalleylive.com

Heavy rain late Tuesday night -- about a third of an inch fell in the 10 o’clock hour -- was an apparent prelude to what Wednesday might hold as the heat wave reaches its fifth day.

And the red lines have returned to the National Weather Service’s page for the Lehigh Valley, with a heat advisory talking about the heat index reaching as high as 101, a hazardous weather outlook focusing on storms that “may be severe with a primary threat of damaging winds” and south of the area air quality that is dangerous to children and the elderly as well as those with asthma, heart disease or other lung ailments.

At 5:51 a.m., the temperature was 70 degrees, with a dew point of 69 and a relatively humidity of 97% at Lehigh Valley International Airport, according to weather service figures. That pretty much means the air was overwhelmed with liquid, with fog in the region and a visibility of three miles at the airport in Hanover Township, Lehigh County.

The dangerous heat’s been with us for days -- hopefully you’ve got the drill down about staying in air conditioning, taking breaks in the shade while working outdoors and drinking plenty of nonalcoholic fluids -- but the new twist is storms that early Wednesday morning were in Illinois and Indiana, the weather service said. The high humidity’s being driven be a southwest flow and by evening, the Midwest trough will be pushing into western Pennsylvania, but strong to severe thunderstorms ahead of it could make an impact by late afternoon in the eastern part of the state, the weather service said.

The storms have the potential for damaging winds and very heavy rain, the weather service said.

That version of unsettled weather should push off the coast by midnight, the weather service said.

Thursday, which appears to be the sixth day of the heat wave, could be stormy again in the afternoon before a “cold” front moves through on Friday, clearing the air and leading to a couple of still unseasonably warm days -- forecast highs of 89 -- before Sunday shoots back up to 92 and the humidity and storm chance returns by Monday as another heat wave -- three days of 90 degrees or above -- takes hold, the weather service said.

Easton’s fire hydrant soaking program was scheduled to end Tuesday as were cooling centers in Hackettstown and Washington Township, Warren County. As of 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Facebook doesn’t show extensions of any of those efforts.
