Jason Gough's forecast: Severe weather expected tonight - Times Union

A couple of days of storms are on tap, with today being the rougher of those. Humidity will be climbing as we roll through the day and although a cold front sweeps through tomorrow, it'll stay on the muggy side as we get into the weekend. We're back to civilized weather on Friday, which will last into the weekend. Plenty of sunshine then as temperatures rise, Sunday will see 90 degrees in a few spots. We get back to more unsettled weather starting on Monday, lasting into mid-week.

Today

A line of showers continues to push north from the Mohawk Valley across Saratoga, Warren and Washington counties into the Green Mountains. This is just a little warm air aloft pushing in and it'll be the start of what will be a pretty active day of weather that will get going this afternoon and persist into tonight.

Clouds are in place across our area with temperatures in the upper 50s to the upper 60s, dewpoints are not far behind. Cloud cover is sometimes difficult to forecast and today is one of those 'sometimes'. Looking farther southwest, skies are clearing in the wake of these showers and while we'll not completely clear out this morning, we will get into some sunshine. That will have consequences on our afternoon activities, as we have some severe weather in the forecast.

A warm front is on its way and with that and additional upper-level energy will come more instability. The increasing sunshine, even a little bit, will also help to cook things up and set the stage for this afternoon's weather.

Showers and thunderstorms will start to develop from mid-afternoon on, and they'll get to strong to severe levels as we get deeper into it. We'll first see isolated, "loner" storms pop up with some clusters getting together thereafter. While everyone is on the hook for some action, the nastiest of these will be from about Ballston Spa south. The threats du jour will be strong, gusty winds as usual, but I also cannot rule out an isolated tornado nor a few large hailstones. Storms will continue into this evening and tonight before quieting down as we approach midnight.

Dewpoints will be climbing through the day, reaching the upper 60s by mid-afternoon as highs top out in the upper 70s and low 80s. Those higher dewpoints will manifest themselves into heavy rain coming from our storms, too.

For tonight, storms and showers will calm down, leaving us warm and muggy under cloud cover with lows in the 60s to 70 degrees.

Tomorrow

The warm front will be through, and that means we'll be waiting for its cold front to follow. We'll have another opportunity for some nasty storms, although not to today's levels. The front will develop a line that will punch through as we get into the afternoon, with the strongest storms being south and east of Albany.

Before all that gets going, we'll have a mix of clouds and sun through the morning and early afternoon with lots of humidity in place. Afternoon highs will top out in the upper 70s and low 80s again, with dewpoints in the upper 60s and low 70s.

Once the front clears the area in the evening, clouds will still stick around but cooler and somewhat drier air will be filtering in. Lows overnight will be more comfortable, in the upper 50s to the upper 60s. Humidity will fall off a little bit, but it'll remain on the muggy side.

Friday into the weekend

Clouds will be loitering about to start our Friday, but they'll break up as we get deeper into the morning. Dewpoints will lower a bit but remain in the 60s across most of the area (50s in the Adirondacks). We'll end up with a mostly sunny afternoon with highs in the upper 70s to the middle 80s.

The weekend will have a good dose of sun with it, especially Saturday. That will be a top ten day with highs in the low and middle 80s.

A bit more humidity for Sunday, along with warmer temps as we make a run toward 90 with a mix of sun and clouds for the afternoon.

We turn back to humidity and unsettled weather to start the workweek as showers and thunderstorms return to the forecast for Monday.

Have a great day!
