Keep an eye on the forecast for Thursday. Severe weather will be possible, according to the National Weather Service.
It’s several days out, so things can and likely will change, but as of Saturday morning much of Alabama will be facing the potential for strong storms and tornadoes later this week, according to NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center.
Forecasters there have outlined an area where severe weather will be possible, and it includes most of the state except parts of south and eastern Alabama (see the map at the top of this post).
The areas that could have to deal with severe weather will likely shift over the next few days, and the timing is uncertain.
Storms were looking more likely on Thursday afternoon into Thursday night, but the weather service also said that could be adjusted -- either forward or backward -- as well.
Storms will be possible along and ahead of a cold front expected to move into the state on Thursday.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham said the “pattern certainly catches the eyes as having the potential to support severe weather somewhere across the Deep South. As often happens with these potential severe setups this time of year, a lot will depend on the specific timing of the forcing mechanism -- does it move through the region during daytime hours when we have a better chance to see destabilization, or does it move in overnight when instability could be more modest and therefore limit the overall coverage of severity of storms.”
The weather service urged all Alabamians to stay up to date on the forecast and get their severe weather plans in place just in case. Now is the time to make sure you have a reliable way to get severe weather warnings -- especially in the overnight hours.
The prep work will save stress and precious time if a storm were to threaten your location.
And it will also ensure you are ready for the typical peak of Alabama’s severe weather season, which runs from March through May.
