So much for the sunshine. Today begins a stretch of rainy weather for Alabama, according to forecasters.
It won’t rain everywhere, and it won’t rain all the time, but parts of the state could get up to 4 inches before the week is over, and that’s leading to concerns about flooding.
A flood watch has been issued for all of north Alabama starting on Tuesday in anticipation of this.
And there could be a few severe storms in the mix as well. NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has included part of Alabama in a severe weather risk area for Tuesday (see the map at the top of this post).
Northwest Alabama has a slight risk, or Level 2 out of 5, which means scattered severe storms will be possible. The rest of north Alabama, and a slice of the state from the northeast to the southwest part of the state, will have a marginal risk.
A marginal risk is Level 1 out of 5 and means that isolated severe storms will be possible.
The main risk with any stronger storm is damaging winds, but a tornado or two will also be possible, especially in the northwest part of the state, according to the National Weather Service.
No severe weather is expected for south Alabama, although there could be a few storms, and no storms at all are expected in southeast Alabama.
Rain was already falling over parts of Alabama on Monday morning near a warm front that is expected to track northward across the state today, according to the weather service.
Forecasters said a cold front will attempt to move closer to Alabama on Tuesday, and that could set off a few stronger storms in the north part of the state, especially on Tuesday afternoon into the evening hours.
Storms could develop ahead of the front, and those could become severe, especially in northwest Alabama, where a tornado will be possible.
The weather service said the storms should eventually form into a slow-moving line as they sag southward. Some areas could see repeated storms, and 1 to 4 inches of rain will be possible in north and central Alabama, which could cause localized flooding.
Here’s a look at how much rain Alabama could get:
The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a flood watch for all of north Alabama from noon on Tuesday until noon on Wednesday.
The weather service the threat for flooding will increase Tuesday afternoon, and heavy rainfall could last through Wednesday.
One to 3 inches of rain are likely, with isolated higher amounts possible, forecasters said.
The greatest flooding risk appears to be across northeast Alabama, the weather service said.
The Alabama counties in the watch are Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Marshall, Jackson, DeKalb and Cullman.
The front is expected to stall out somewhere over south or south-central Alabama on Wednesday and then drift back northward again on Thursday.
Areas south of the front will be very warm on Wednesday and Thursday, with highs in the 70s and 80s expected. Here are Thursday’s forecast highs:
Then the front is expected to be pushed southward again, leading to widespread rainfall on Thursday across north and central Alabama, the weather service said.
So far there is no mention of severe weather for Alabama on Thursday.
The rain will finally move out on Friday, but it won’t stay dry for all that long. More rain will be possible starting later on Sunday with the next weather system.
