Several tractor trailers were blown over in high winds and a possible tornado on Interstate 22 in northern Alabama Thursday evening in severe weather that also prompted at least one rescue in a Birmingham suburb.

The tipped over trucks were reported around the same time a tornado-warned storm moved through Jefferson and Walker counties in the general vicinity of metro Birmingham, ABC 33/40 reported.

There were reports of injuries, according to a Facebook post from the city of Adamsville that showed a truck overturned near the West Jefferson exit.

At least one person was rescued after a tree fell on a mobile home in the Birmingham suburb of Leeds, WIAT-TV reported. A radar-confirmed tornado moved through the area between 7:15 and 7:25.

A Leeds police dispatcher told weather.com there were no immediate reports of major injuries.

Video posted to social media also showed storm damage in Boley Springs, Alabama, about 42 miles northwest of Birmingham. Debris was strewn in trees and across a road. A tornado was confirmed on radar near town.

People crowded into a storm shelter further to the west in Pickens County.

More than 25,000 homes and businesses were without power as of about 8 p.m. EST in areas where storms moved through in Alabama, according to PowerOutage.us. There were about 10,000 power outages in Mississippi.

Wind gusts between 35 and 50 mph were reported earlier in the day in Huntsville, Alabama, where trees were blowing down and power outages were ticking up around 1 p.m.

The threat of severe weather prompted several school districts in northern Alabama to dismiss early Thursday afternoon, including Huntsville City Schools, Madison County, Jackson County, Franklin County and Limestone County.

In the Birmingham area, Birmingham City Schools, Hoover City Schools, Fayette County, Shelby County and several others planned to send students home early.

Early dismissals in Tennessee included schools in Clay, Cumberland, Dekalb, Jackson, Marshall and Warren Counties.

In Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear warned residents to remain vigilant ahead of the storms.

“Kentuckians should follow their local forecasts as this storm moves across the commonwealth,” Beshear said in a news release Wednesday. “If you are out and about, be aware of your surroundings. Stay away from downed limbs and power lines, and if you come upon a flooded road, turn around and find another route.”

Flash flood warnings were issued Thursday afternoon for some western parts of the state devastated by a tornado outbreak in mid-December. A 40 mph wind gust was reported in Bowling Green around noon, according to the National Weather Service in Louisville.

The severe weather is on the warm side of a system named Winter Storm Miles by The Weather Channel. The winter storm is spreading snow, ice and soaking rain from the Central Plains to the Midwest and Great Lakes.

Flooding was reported Thursday morning in the Grand Rapids area, as well as in Kosciusko and Whitley counties in Northern Indiana and in parts of southern Missouri.
