Flash Flooding alerts are back in the forecast as a potent cold front moves toward Utah, bringing with it some stronger winds and much-needed rain chances.
2News Meteorologist Matt Johnson said A Flash Flood Watch will be going into effect coming into Tuesday afternoon and last through Wednesday night for a good portion of the state.
The Watch extends from St. George northward to Salt Lake City.
Not only could we see some flash flood-worthy rain, but there's also a chance a few of these storms could erupt in severity.
Before the rain moves in, there remains a dangerous fire threat. The dry, warmer air will be sticking around for the majority of the daytime hours. As the front approaches and passes, winds will kick up before the liquid gold pours in.
A Red Flag Warning, indicating critical fire danger zones, encompasses the majority of the state through Tuesday night.
This threat is only heightened due to the fact that Utah has had an extremely dry two weeks prior. The National Weather Services said relative humidity in the region could be as low as 10 percent at times.
Even when storms begin to pop, frequent lightning may be possible which could spark up a fire, therefore the Red Flag Warnings will last through 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Speaking of lightning, the storm chances that do arrive later Tuesday afternoon come with a chance some could become severe.
Almost all of Utah is under a Marginal Risk for severe weather development Tuesday.
A Marginal Risk indicates a one in five chance a severe storm could develop over the threatened area.
For those storms that do pop and become severe, wind and hail will be the biggest threats alongside the lightning and fire risks.
Widespread rainfall is expected Wednesday with the severe threat moving slightly further to the west.
With the imminent changes on the way for the state, there is one more thing we cannot forget to mention - improving air quality.
With the cold front, stronger winds and rain we can all expect more breathable air as smoke dilutes and is pushed away.
By Wednesday, air quality levels will return to moderate in Salt Lake County.
Temperatures will also take a dip with highs topping off in the low 80s coming into the weekend for the Wasatch Front, upper 80s to low 90s for St. George.
The 7-Day Forecast outlines a small, cool wet stretch before drier and warmer air returns next week.
