Severe thunderstorm watch issued for several central Pa. counties - PennLive

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia until 9 p.m. Sunday.

In Pennsylvania the severe thunderstorm watch covers 23 counties including Adams, Cumberland, Franklin, Juniata, Mifflin, Perry, Snyder and York counties.

The severe thunderstorm watch includes Carlisle, Chambersburg, Gettysburg, Mifflintown, Newport, Waynesboro and York among a number of other cities in the 23-county area.

Isolated hail up to the size of a quarter is possible. Scattered wind gusts up to 65 mph are also possible.

A severe thunderstorm watch is issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms -- thunderstorms that produce one inch hail or larger in diameter and/or winds equal or exceed 58 miles an hour -- in and close to the watch area. They are normally issued well in advance of the actual occurrence of severe weather.
