Severe thunderstorms with the potential to create a tornado are moving into central Pa., the National Weather Service warned.
Just before 7 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for southern Bedford County, Huntingdon, Franklin, Mifflin, Fulton, Juniata, Northumberland counties, northwestern Cumberland County, southern Centre County and southwestern Perry County.
The warning is in effect until 8:15 p.m., according to the NWS.
The severe thunderstorms are bringing 70 mph wind gusts, which could cause considerable damage to mobile homes, roofs and outbuildings, the NWS said. There will be torrential rainfall which could lead to flash flooding.
The part of the storm over Centre County was over Bald Eagle State Park moving northeast at 20 mph and the radar indicated it could bring tornado conditions.
For this part of the storm, mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed, and damage to roofs, windows and vehicles is expected, the NWS.
The storm will be moving into the area until at least 7:10 p.m. from the park to Blanchard to Mill Hall.
The NWS advises that people in the area of the tornado warning take cover immediately, and move to the basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows and anyone outside, in a mobile home or in a vehicle should move to the closest substantial shelter to protect yourself from flying debris.
Heavy rain could be hiding the tornado, the NWS warned.
For those under the severe thunderstorm warning, the NWS warns that it is an extremely dangerous storm that has already produced widespread wind damage across the I-99 corridor.
“If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning,” the NWS warned. “Move to safe shelter now!”
