N.J. weather: Severe thunderstorm watch issued. Heavy rain, winds up to 70 mph, large hail possible. - NJ.com

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for all 21 counties in New Jersey with the potential for heavy rain, hail and wind gusts as strong as 70 mph Wednesday afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service said.

Some scattered strong storms began to roll into northern New Jersey as early as 11:30 a.m., with additional storms expected to push south and east across the rest of the state no later than mid-afternoon, forecasters said.

Damaging wind gusts and large hail — possibly as big as ping pong balls — are the main threats from the storms, which should wrap up by sundown.

The severe thunderstorm watch takes effect at 11:55 a.m. and expires at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

“A moist and unstable air mass will exist near the front, with several severe storms expected by early afternoon,” the NWS Storm Prediction Center said Wednesday morning.

A severe thunderstorm watch is not as urgent as a warning, but it means conditions are favorable for some powerful storms with damaging winds, large hail and frequent lightning.

The good news is that the weather service has made no mention of flash flooding concerns with Wednesday’s storms. The only river in New Jersey near flood stage is the Rockaway River in the Boonton area of Morris County.

Last weekend, parts of New Jersey were pounded by torrential rain during a series of fierce thunderstorms that flooded many basements and caused flash flooding, with rescue workers called to free cars submerged in high water on roads.

The weekend storms also triggered a funnel cloud in Woodbridge in Middlesex County and a small tornado that touched down in the Columbus section of Mansfield Township in Burlington County. The tornado was classified as an EF-1, with top winds of 80 to 90 mph.
