Wyoming Severe Weather Week presses on with flash flooding tips - wyomingnewsnow.tv

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) -

Moving along with Wyoming Severe Weather Awareness Week, today is all about flooding. According to the National Weather Service, flash flooding kills more people than any other weather hazard combined. All it takes is about two feet of water flowing across a road to lift up and carry off a vehicle.

The weather service cautions drivers to know the danger, and if you see flooding, turn around.

Tim Troutman, National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist stated, “A lot of folks think well, I’ve got this big SUV, I’ve got a van, I’ve got a four wheel drive truck, I can put it in four wheel drive and I can make it through it. Well, no. What happens is the water gets up and underneath the vehicle, it gets toward the bottom of the door, and the buoyancy of the vehicle causes with the flowing current, lifts up the vehicle and carries the person off.”

The weather service said to remember this motto. “Turn around, don’t drown,” and be sure you drive away from flooding.
