Risk for severe weather continues overnight for Alabama; 2 severe thunderstorm watches continue - AL.com

The threat for severe weather will continue overnight for Alabama, according to forecasters.

And two severe thunderstorm watches continue for parts of the state.

The first severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for areas in west and central Alabama until 4 a.m.:

Severe thunderstorm watch 1

Several central Alabama counties are left in a severe thunderstorm watch.

The counties left in this watch are Bibb, Dallas, Greene, Hale, Marengo, Perry and Sumter.

Another severe thunderstorm watch includes several southwest Alabama counties. It will also be in effect until 4 a.m.:

Severe thunderstorm watch 2

Several southwest Alabama counties are in a severe thunderstorm watch until 4 a.m.

The counties in this watch are Choctaw, Clarke, Washington and Wilcox.

Storms in the northern half of the state were generally staying under severe limits as of early this morning.

The same can’t be said for those farther south.

The National Weather Service in Mobile was watching a line of strong to severe storms moving into southwest Alabama from Mississippi.

Those storms, forecasters said, had the potential to produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and isolated tornadoes.

Heavy rain will also be possible, with 1 to 3 inches expected, forecasters said.

The threat for severe storms and flooding will move eastward across south Alabama through the morning hours.

The weather service in Mobile is also watching a second line of storms developing to the west over Mississippi and Louisiana that will also head east and could reach Alabama in the 5 to 10 a.m. timeframe.

That line will also bring a risk of damaging winds, hail and tornadoes.

Forecasters said the northern extent of the second round will be determined by how expansive the first round is.

Storms will also be possible for parts of south-central Alabama:

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has the southern part of Alabama in an enhanced risk for severe weather today (see the map at the top of this post).

An enhanced risk is Level 3 out of 5 and means numerous severe storms will be possible.

Areas in the enhanced risk are Mobile, Dothan, Troy and Greenville, among others.

Areas to the north of that enhanced risk area have a slight risk, which is Level 2 and means scattered severe storms are possible. Places such as Montgomery and Auburn are in the slight risk zone.

A marginal risk is in place for parts of northern and eastern Alabama (Level 1).

Drier weather is expected starting on Sunday, but rain chances could begin to increase again on Tuesday.
