Deadman Road remains closed as firefighters continue to work on the Cameron Peak Fire, but people on vehicle and on foot are violating the closure.
While the fire is fully contained, crews are still working throughout the area, and expect to do so for a few weeks, to monitor portions that are still hot and to remove debris that could burn. Fire officials said that, while they do so, they are reporting “increased violation” of the Deadman Road (County Road 86) closure by people both driving and walking into the area.
“This closure is in place for a reason,” according to a Sunday morning update from the fire management team. “The roads in this area are very slick, and our crews and equipment are working on these roads. Added traffic and potential slide-offs endanger the lives of our firefighters. Please respect the closure.”
The Cameron Peak Fire, which sparked Aug. 13, burned 208,913 acres, becoming the largest wildfire in state history. The cause of the fire, believed to be human-caused, is still under investigation.
