Tuesday’s weather stays fairly quiet before a storm system brings in more heat, humidity and the risk of severe weather by Wednesday.
Tuesday’s forecast
The entire state sees above average highs again Tuesday, with temperatures in the 80s.
Thanks to lower humidity, northern Minnesota stays a bit more comfortable in the afternoon, while the southern half of the state remains humid again.
A lingering frontal boundary is producing a few showers and storms for southern Minnesota Tuesday morning, and that area is the most likely to see isolated activity through the afternoon.
Otherwise, most of the state stays dry and sunny until storms start moving into northwestern Minnesota late Tuesday night.
Severe weather likely
The storms that move in late Tuesday are part of a storm system that will move across Minnesota, bringing showers and storms through at least Thursday morning. The system is dynamic enough to produce occasional severe weather as it moves.
For Tuesday night into early Wednesday, the severe risk is highest in northwestern and north-central Minnesota.
Then the risk shifts across the rest of the state Wednesday (although the risk is more isolated in southeastern Minnesota).
Hail and damaging wind are the primary threat, but isolated tornadoes are possible as well. Periods of heavy rain are also likely with strong storms.
It currently looks like the heaviest rain with the system could target northern and central Minnesota, with some widespread totals over an inch of rain possible.
For the Twin Cities, spotty activity is possible by Wednesday evening, but it looks like the strongest storms and heaviest rain are likely overnight Wednesday into early Thursday.
After the storm system clears out early Thursday, the weather stays quieter again through Friday, with scattered showers and storms possible again Saturday.
Hotter again Wednesday
The same storm that brings the severe weather risk will bring breezy southerly winds on Wednesday. That funnels hot, moist air into the state, putting southern Minnesota back in the 90s Wednesday, with heat indices near 100 degrees.
Behind the system, temperatures cool slightly Thursday, but still stay above average. Overall, the rest of this week and likely all of next week see the continuation of the warm and humid trend we’ve had recently.
Here is the Twin Cities forecast through Saturday:
