Officials prepare ahead of severe weekend storms - WAOW

(WAOW) -- Officials in the Northwoods said they're always preparing for summer storms.

"A severe storm can happen any time so we always have to be prepared," said Oneida Co. Emergency Management Director Ken Kortenhof. "We test our equipment to make sure we can notify people and our first responders appropriately. And we also test the equipment that notifies us about the severe weather."

WPS also making preparations for the weekend storms. Spokesperson Matt Cullen said the electric company encourages customers to report outages as soon as the can safely. Outages can be reported by calling in or using the WPS app.

"When it comes to severe weather our app is a really great tool to be able to have handy so you can track the status of an outage, and you can see what the status is of any updates or any repairs that are being made," Cullen said.

He also encourages people to report any downed power lines or other electric hazards. And Cullen also advised staying at least 25 feet away from any downed lines.
