(KNSI) - Much of central Minnesota is under a moderate risk for severe weather overnight tonight. Meteorologist Eric Ahasic with the National Weather Service forecast office in Chanhassen, says moderate may not sound that severe, but it is.

"Moderate risk, even though moderate doesn't sound that high, that's actually four out of five on the category scale that they use to rank the severe weather potential. We don't get very many of those. It's maybe once a year if not kind of every other year we're under one of those level four or higher risks. This is not your run of the mill summertime, few severe weather reports here and there. This is looking like a widespread event with the potential for a lot of wind damage."

The system he says will start in the Dakotas and spread east overnight. According to Ahasic, for the St. Cloud area, it's looking like after midnight before storms roll in bringing high winds, hail, and heavy rain. He says have a way to get warnings that will wake you up.

"There are plenty of apps you can download on your phone that you can enter your location and they'll send you an alert or make a noise if a warning is issued for your area. Weather radios are a great choice, if you've got one of those at home. Or even leaving the radio or TV on at a lower volume."

NOAA has a list of weather alert apps on its website. Find them by clicking here.

High winds, damaging hail, and heavy rain are all possible with this system.

Saturday brings even higher temperatures and more humidity to the area. An excessive heat watch has been issued for southwest of a line from about Hinckley back toward the most southwestern part of the state.
