Updated: Severe weather risk upgraded for small part of Alabama tonight - AL.com

Another round of storms is in the forecast for north and north-central Alabama -- but not until later tonight.

Some of those storms could be severe. NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added an enhanced risk for severe weather for the northwest corner of Alabama as of Saturday night.

Much of the rest of north Alabama has a slight risk for severe weather, and a marginal risk covers part of north-central Alabama.

An enhanced risk means “numerous” severe storms will be possible. A slight risk means scattered severe storms will be possible. Isolated severe storms will be possible in areas in a marginal risk.

All modes of severe weather will be on the table, but damaging wind gusts and hail will be the most likely. The risk for tornadoes is lower but can’t be ruled out.

For Alabama this will be a mainly overnight event, with storms arriving in the state by 11 p.m. or so. The National Weather Service is cautioning those in the risk areas to have a way to get warnings overnight.

Don’t rely on an outdoor siren to wake you. Some other options are a NOAA weather radio or a smartphone app.

Saturday featured summer-like temperatures across the state, with several cities either breaking or tying high temperature records for March 28.

A cold front will approach tonight, and rain and storms are expected to develop along and ahead of it.

The storms were moving into west Tennessee and northern Mississippi as of 8 p.m., and a tornado watch was in effect to the west of Alabama:

According to the weather service the storms could approach northwest Alabama by 10 p.m. to midnight and spread eastward and southward though the night and into the morning.

The storms are expected to weaken as they move deeper into Alabama, but there is still a chance a few could be strong as they approach central Alabama, and the weather service in Birmingham has several of its counties under a marginal risk:

Forecasters said the best chance for strong storms in north-central Alabama will come between 11 p.m. Saturday and 4 a.m. Sunday.

Severe weather is not expected in south Alabama.

Cooler and drier air will follow the front, with highs on Sunday expected to be about 10 degrees cooler on Sunday in north and parts of central Alabama, according to the weather service.

The next chance for rain will come Monday into Tuesday, and there will be another risk for strong storms. However this time south Alabama may have all the action.

The Day 4 severe weather outlook from the Storm Prediction Center shows a risk of severe weather mainly south of Interstate 85 on Tuesday:

South Alabama could be facing a round of strong storms on Tuesday.
