It's time to evaluate your severe weather precautions.
The coronavirus pandemic has left many publicly used buildings effectively shuttered, including places people might go during severe weather. The next "slight" chance of storms will be Friday, according to the Storm Prediction Center, and severe weather season typically kicks off in April.
Hospitals have implemented screening guidelines for anyone entering their structures, and Integris last week said that previous access during storms would not be possible "in light of the new COVID-19 realities."
Integris said none of its facilities, nor any other hospital, would be able to offer public shelter during severe weather.
Each building on the University of Central Oklahoma's campus has a designated location to find refuge, but should not be considered a public shelter. Instead, those places are intended for use by students, faculty and staff that are on campus, said Interim Vice President for Communications Adrienne Nobles.
"With the physical campus closing at 5 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday) through at least April 15 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and governmental guidance, we will only be opening shelters for our remaining housing residents and essential employees to use," Nobles said. "That means many of the places people may had access to in the past will not be available. In the event of severe weather, we advise not taking the risk of coming to campus and to shelter in place."
Various buildings on the University of Oklahoma campus have been approved as severe weather refuge areas. OU hasn't yet published guidelines for storm shelter use, and the Norman campus remains operational with online classes and employees encouraged to work from home.
Many cities, including Oklahoma City, Norman, Edmond and Moore, do not operate public shelters. Residents are often urged to shelter in place, in the lowest and most protected part of their home or business, and not be on the road during tornadic weather.
