This is Indiana Severe Weather Preparedness Week - Purdue News Service

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The National Weather Service, in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, has designated this week (March 15-21) as Indiana Severe Weather Preparedness Week. The goal for the week is to raise awareness about the hazards of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and to provide resources to help people prepare for severe weather.

Purdue is located in a county that is home to the highest number of reported tornado touchdowns in the state. All building occupants should take a few minutes to review their building emergency plan and familiarize themselves with their building’s shelter-in-place locations. Severe weather procedures are published annually.

"Even though our collective focus has been on the evolving COVID-19 public health emergency, we all must remain vigilant to our known hazards too,” said Jefferson Howells, director of campus emergency preparedness and planning at Purdue. “After all, severe weather will not wait for one emergency to be resolved before it strikes."

People also are reminded to be aware of the deadly dangers of flooding. Click “Turn Around, Don't Drown!" to learn more.

Individual consultations are available for those interested in learning more about spring weather safety. Please visit the website or contact Howells at jfhowells@purdue.edu.
