It’s time for another round of severe weather in Alabama — but this time south Alabama has to especially be on guard.
Strong to severe storms will be possible across the southern half of the state from early Tuesday morning through the afternoon hours, according to the National Weather Service.
Those storms could contain tornadoes, wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail, according to forecasters.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has the southern half of Alabama in a slight risk for severe weather on Tuesday (the areas in yellow in the map above). A slight risk means scattered severe storms will be possible.
Areas that will be under a slight risk include Montgomery, Auburn, Dothan, Troy and Greenville — but not Mobile.
Areas to the north and south of the slight risk area will have a marginal risk (areas in dark green on the map), which means isolated severe storms will be possible.
Areas that will be in a marginal risk on Tuesday include Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Talladega — and to the south the Mobile area and the beaches.
Be sure to keep up to date with the forecast as these areas could change by Tuesday.
Regardless if you’re in the slight risk or marginal risk you need to make sure you have a way to get warnings if one is issued for your area.
The storms are expected to be moving quickly, and the worst of the weather should clear Alabama by the afternoon, according to the weather.
Severe weather is not expected in north Alabama, which is forecast to be on the “cold” side of the system, but the weather service said up to an inch of rain will be possible from late tonight into Tuesday.
Cooler and drier weather is expected on Wednesday, and highs may not get out of the 50s in some parts of north Alabama. Central Alabama is forecast to top out in the 60s, and low 70s are forecast for south Alabama.
